Seo Agency Podcasting Tips That You Can Use In Real Life, Too

Does it feel like you do everything that you possibly can to market your business online but you don’t quite have the results you like? Are you writing blogs, making videos, posting on social media, answering questions online, and more, but it still feels like you’re missing something? That “something” could be podcasting. Here at our omnichannel digital marketing and SEO agency, I do a strong majority of our podcasts. There are some things I wish I’d known when I started.
 
Now, when I say “podcast” in this context, I mean, basically, “filmed interview.” I’ve done plenty of different kinds of podcasts (lots of people talking, walk-and-talk, etc.) But, me interviewing one of our clients, one of my colleagues/supervisors, or a professional outside of Website Depot makes up the majority of the podcasts I’ve done.

These can do wonders for your branding, your SEO, and so much more. They can put a human face to your company, making it possible for you to connect to more folks quickly and easily. These are tips for if you’re “running” the podcast, but, they’re good if you’re going to be a guest on one, too.

Ask Open Ended Questions (and Remember Why You Are)
 
It may sound easy to always ask open-ended questions, but it’s not. If you feel that you’ve just asked a question that can be answered with “yes or no,” feel free to throw in an “expand upon that.”

Why? Because if you’re interviewing someone on your podcast, they’re there because they have something to say. They have something to share. So, it’s your job to set them up in such a way that they’ll be able to share it quickly and easily. “Yes” and “no” isn’t doing that.  In a way, just using “yes” and “no” questions makes it tougher on other members of our SEO agency.

What I tell people on my podcast (particularly those who are a bit nervous) is some version of: “Hey, I get that you’re nervous, but you’re here because you’re a real professional. You have plenty of insight and value to share. That’s all you have to do, talk about what you know, and you’ll be fine.”

So, when you ask open-ended questions, you give them the opportunity to do exactly that.

Now, if you’re a guest, consequently, your job, then, is to show your expertise. If the person questioning you gives you a “yes or no” answer, then just know to expand upon. Explain how you got to the answer that you did.

You’ll show your expertise. You’ll demonstrate exactly why you’re a pro. Which, of course, is the entire point of all of this.

Active Listening (How You Define It)
Podcasting can, for lack of a better word, be awkward. One (or sometimes even both) people are in a location they are unfamiliar with, talking to (more or less) a stranger, all in the effort to showcase their knowledge. Sure, it can seem stilted and strange, but, if you’re on the podcast, it’s your job to keep that from being the case.

How do you do this? Well, in lots of ways, but one of the most important is through engaging in active listening. Don’t “pretend” to be interested in what the other person has to say. Actually be interested in what they have to say.

You’re talking to a professional about what they do! (Or, if you’re a guest, you get an opportunity to showcase what you’re best at!) That’s a great opportunity. By listening to the other person, by truly focusing on them and what they say, you won’t be bothered by any “awkwardness,” strangeness, or the like.
The keywords in what I just wrote were “focusing on them.” If you focus on yourself, then you very well may be too self-aware. Then, it’s easy to get trapped in your thoughts, “in your head,” so to speak, and thinking about you and how you’re coming off instead of what you should be focusing on.

But, if you focus on the other person, and put all of your attention on them and what they’re doing or saying, you give yourself the best opportunity to come off exactly how you want.

One Last Question…
 
This is maybe my most important podcasting tip. I always end every podcast I do with this same question (I forget which actual journalist I stole it from). I always ask: “is there anything you wanted to say that I didn’t bring up?”

It’s like magic.
 
The person always lights up and tells me something I had no idea about, something that matters to them. The rare times that this doesn’t result in a true gem it’s because they already were so good they said so much.

If you’re a guest, you don’t have to wait to hear this question. If you reach what feels like the end of a podcast (and you’ll probably know when the person hosting is “landing the plane,” so to speak) feel free to jump in with something that’s important to you.

In fact, you can even say, “Is that all you wanted to ask me?” Or, alternatively, some version of “Can I add something?”
 
That way, you’ll always be able to get out everything you want. You’ll feel better if you jump in and add something that feels important versus just holding it in.

Digital Marketing Agency Tips For Taking Better Notes On Your Content

Are you good at receiving notes on your content? When your supervisor, client, or even colleague, tells you about changes they want made to your content, how do you handle that? This is one of the most important (and least discussed) skills to cultivate as a content creator. As a writer and podcast host at a digital marketing agency, I get notes all of the time. Talking to others in the field, I’ve found this is a muscle that not all content creators have stretched, to use an analogy.

The better you are at taking notes and suggestions, the better your content is going to be. This doesn’t just mean listening (although that’s crucial), it also means being able to interpret what you’re being told even if the person telling you the note isn’t entirely sure what they mean.
 
These tips won’t just help content creators, of course. They’re beneficial for those who work or with anyone else.

What to Always Remember
 
None of this is personal. It’s never personal, not in the slightest. You and the person giving you the note want the exact same thing: for the content to be better. You both want the content to be as good as it can be. To be able to truly take a note/suggestion and use it to make content better, you must always remember that you and the person giving you the note are on the same side.

As you’ve no doubt heard many times, “content is king.” As a monarch, content is demanding. Content must be fed, day after day. As such, it can become a bit of a grind. I’ve found that many of the best content creators have cultivated a sense of wanting notes, wanting suggestions, even if it does lead to more work. Why? Because it will make the work better as well as easier in the future.

Case in point: for many of my clients, I end up doing multiple drafts of their initial blogs, the first drafts of their service and city pages, etc. Sometimes that takes several drafts. But, in the end, all of that work pays off and makes things easier later on.

First, the client is happy that they have been heard, that the content more accurately matches their branding, company, and so forth. Moreover, their content becomes easier to create once I know the voice, the tone, what they want emphasized, and so forth.

One Question to Ask
 
When taking a note/suggestion from someone, there’s one question you always want to ask yourself: “What is the note behind this note?” To phrase it another way: “What are they really saying?”

To use an example from earlier in my content writing career, clients would occasionally say some version of: “I want shorter, tighter sentences.” Something like that.

That surprised me. It did so for many reasons, not the least of which was that many of my sentences were often shorter. When I looked at the work, when I thought about it, I realized that the problem was that my paragraphs were too long.

By making shorter paragraphs, it made the read easier. Then, people who were professionals in their fields but not professional writers were better able to read and understand the content. Now, I practically never receive that note from a client.

As a content creator, it’s your job to not just create the content but to understand how it’s perceived. Your first audience, almost invariably, is the client. Once you know exactly what they’re looking for and how to “finetune” the content for them, then and only then is the content ready to post for the rest of the world.

How to Respond

When someone gives you notes/critiques about your content, you want to respond the right way. That means responding in such a way that both strengthens your connection/relationship to the client/supervisor giving you notes, yes, but also that makes the content better.

What I often think of is some version of “Yes. And…”

Have you ever seen or done Improv comedy? If so, then you probably know that the most important thing the performers can do is to cultivate an attitude of “Yes, and…” with their other performers. That way, they can work together, they can create something that many people can enjoy.

The same is true with your content.

When your supervisor/client makes a suggestion, I agree 99% of the time (because they’re usually right). Then, I also make sure to add the “and.” Sometimes, that “and” is: “and I’ll make sure to remember that going forward,” or “I’ll make similar changes all throughout your content.”

This doesn’t mean that you should fail to stand up for yourself, to not believe in the content you created, or anything of that nature. If you feel necessary, explain why you did what you did, and what led you to create that which you created.

That said, being able to take suggestions and notes from your clients and supervisors alike is an important, important skill for building better content today and tomorrow.

Digital Marketing Agency Tips For Less Stressful Content Creation

Did you wake up today with a lot of content to create? Do you have so much content to create that you feel kinda overwhelmed? Or, alternatively, have you been creating so much content that here, on Monday morning, you feel burned out? That’s perfectly understandable. Content is king, but it’s rarely a satisfied monarch. Content must be created constantly and it must be created constantly well. These are some tips I use to stay ahead of the content crushing curve at our digital marketing agency.

These are just what works for me. They may not work for you. By experimenting with these, you can find something that fits you perfectly.

Plan Ahead (Even if It’s a Short Distance)
When someone says “plan ahead,” I usually get annoyed. That’s because the first place my mind goes is: “oh, they want me to plan this ahead six months in advance or something. Like I have any time for that.” The truth is that you can be better served by just planning ahead a bit the night before.

For example, usually, right before I go to bed, I do just a little bit of work for the next day. Not much, not too much at all, but just a little. I try to do my pre-work, whether it’s pre-writing for written content, outlining for voiceover/podcasting, etc. That way, when I get working the next morning, I am absolutely ready to jump in and get to it. Speaking of:

Bullet Points Guide the Way
Prewriting/outlining/whatever you want to call it is crucial for content. I have no idea how to do things another way. For me, when it comes to writing or voiceover/podcasting, I make sure to use bullet points.

I write out what I absolutely want to cover. I make sure that each of them are short, punchy, and can be elaborated upon. If something doesn’t feel as important once I’ve put them all together, I take it out. Often, that’s a point that can be made underneath one of the others, in terms of elaboration.

For example, that’s how I wrote this blog. I wrote my bullet points and elaborated. Indeed, each of the bullet points became a heading. I use those as the “anchors,” so to speak, and then work around them.

Allow Yourself to Find It As You Create
Another great thing about bullet points: they don’t give too much information. A bullet point, a heading, etc., isn’t an entire paragraph. It’s a point that can be deepened, that can be explained at length. That makes sense in a blog, of course. But, it works for podcasting/explainer videos, too.

I’ve found in podcasting keeping these bullet points short helps to make the videos more authentic. So many guests I’ve sat down with over the years, when we talk about the podcast initially, want to have everything scripted out. They want lines. They want to be able to recite the lines on camera.

I get it. Being in camera for the first time(s) can be maddening. You’re liable to be nervous, feel awkward/unnatural, etc. But, and trust me on this, you’re going to feel that way even stronger if you’re trying to remember exactly what it is you wanted to say.

That’s where the bullet points come in. By using those, the guest has to explain things. They have to be able to go into detail. And, inevitably, this is where the “magic” happens. Instead of having to remember some line, the guest lights up when they talk about something they’re passionate about.

When someone’s talking about their business, what they’re a professional at, they’re a true expert. As such, they know exactly what they’re talking about. So, their fear of the camera, of speaking, goes away. If it doesn’t go away entirely, they’re at least on “firmer ground,” so to speak, as they’re talking about something they know inside and out.

Nothing Wrong With a 2nd Pass
All of that having been said, there’s nothing wrong with doing things a second time. Obviously, if you may not have the time, but if you do, it’s fine to read what you wrote out loud. Run it through as many grammar and spell check things you can that you trust.

If you’re doing a podcast/some kind of speaking (and it isn’t live) then there’s nothing wrong with a second take. (This does, of course, depend upon the nature and structure of the podcast). And then, even if it is “live,” in front of an audience, etc., it’s usually quite all right to elaborate on something you said previously, to emphasize it again.

A little revision, a bit of clarification, can go a long way towards creating better content.
